German astronomer from a famous dynasty.
He researched on double stars and geodesy in Dorpat until 1839,
when he founded and became director of the new Pulkovo Observatory near St Petersburg,
opened in 1839.
In 1861, his son Otto Wilhelm von Struve succeeded him (* 1819 in Dorpat/Estonia, +1905 in Karlsruhe/Germany).
